Unexpected Ducks

Pulled into The Lovely’s driveway yesterday, glanced to my left and, in the middle of a miniature pond in the neighbor’s back yard (created by the previous night’s rain), I saw something go swimming by, skimming across the top of the water.

Those can’t be birds, I thought. (If you’ve ever watched birds in a puddle or a bird bath, then you know what I’m talking about: They flip water all over themselves and splash around like 2-year-old kids in a bath tub! There is NO swimming and NO skimming!)

Could they be ... ducks?!

They were, indeed! Two ducklings, in fact. Right there, in the middle of the unexpected mini-pond, right there in the middle of town.

Naturally, I wanted to get a picture. The baby ducks got out of the water and, after giving an appreciative look toward a robin sitting near the puddle (as if to say, “Mama!”), waddled off toward some brush. They emerged a few minutes later:

I haven’t seen them since ... and I miss them!!
